Classifications
Each player has a league classification reflecting their strength.
Classifications range from D (lowest) to A (highest, international standard).
There are two ways to gain "promotion" into a higher classification: either by doing well in tournaments or by winning enough singles in the league matches.
To be promoted on the basis of good results in the league match, a player needs to win at least 10 promotion points in one year (September - April). Promotion points are gained by winning matches against players of the same or a higher classification: one point for winning against a player of the same ranking, two points for beating one who is one classification higher, and so on.
To gain promotion at tournaments, you either need to win one or two singles tournaments or a (usually higher) number of doubles tournaments. A combination of both also works. The exact number of tournaments you need to win depends on your original classification. Also keep in mind that tournaments only count towards your classification if they meet certain minimum criteria with regard to the number of participants and the number of matches required to win. More details and the exact requirements per classification are available in the official set of rules (pages 8-10).
You cannot gain promotion points at tournaments - the two promotion systems exist in parallel and good results in one cannot normally be transferred into the other.
